The Red Umbrella

This picture came about by chance and I actually had a completely different picture in my head. The plan was as follows: The weather forecast said rain the next day when I was in Tokyo on the 2-week trip. When I checked early in the morning to see when the viewpoint above the famous Shibuya intersection opens, I realized that this only happens at 11 a.m. (!). I actually wanted to photograph the intersection full of umbrellas during rush hour (as I knew from Photo & Film), but that didn't happen. Oh well; I thought to myself at midday there would still be thousands of people crossing the intersection. So everything is good. At 11 sharp I stand in front of the platform and notice that the rain had almost completely stopped. Luckily, actually, because umbrellas were forbidden on the platform (and my jacket wasn't really waterproof). A look over the parapet of the platform showed: the intersection was almost completely empty, almost no people - what?. Unexpectedly. I still tried to make the best of the situation. To my delight, some passers-by hadn't noticed that the rain had stopped, and after a few minutes this picture was taken. But it wasn't until a few weeks after my stay that I realized how powerful this image could be.
